Choose an Experienced Team in Texas

The United States may designate a foreign country for TPS due to conditions in the country that temporarily prevent the country's nationals from returning safely, or in certain circumstances, where the country is unable to handle the return of its nationals adequately.

During a designated period, individuals who have TPS:

  • Are not removable from the United States
  • Can obtain an employment authorization document (EAD)
  • May be granted travel authorization
  • Cannot be detained by DHS on the basis of his or her immigration status in the United States.

The U.S. may designate a country for TPS due to the following temporary conditions in the country:

  • Ongoing armed conflict (such as civil war)
  • An environmental disaster (such as earthquake or hurricane), or an epidemic
  • Other extraordinary and temporary conditions

As of May 2024, the following countries have been designated for TPS protection. Visit https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/temporary-protected-status for the most recently updated list.

  • Afghanistan
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Cameroon
  • El Salvador
  • Ethiopia
  • Haiti
  • Honduras
  • Nepal
  • Nicaragua
  • Somalia
  • South Sudan
  • Sudan
    Syria
  • Ukraine
  • Venezuela
  • Yemen

TPS is a temporary benefit that does not lead to lawful permanent resident status or give any other immigration status. It is however life changing and will allow those who have it to live and work in the United States legally.

Contact Christensen Immigration Attorneys at (972) 497-1017 to determine your eligibility for TPS or seek guidance through the application or renewal process.
